new plan

September 23rd, 2009

OK… So it’s been 3 days and I haven’t really entered any contests. I guess I’m just not terribly motivated to go through with this plan. Here’s a new plan: I want to carve a bear from a block of wood using only a chainsaw. Like this guy:

Anybody interested in joining me in my new endeavor can go to this website for step by step instructions:

The premise

September 20th, 2009

Welcome to my blog. My name is Alex Roher. I’m a anesthesiology resident at Loma Linda University Medical Center, Southern California. I love what I do and all but this blog has NOTHING to do with it. Instead, this blog will document a year long project I came up with to win a contest. ANY contest for ANY prize.

Now, I admit I haven’t won anything beyond a third grade game of BINGO. The reason being: like almost everyone else, I immediately disregard any contest I come across.  I think to myself: “it’s just a trick to get my contact info.” and that combined with an overwhelming laziness to fill out an entry form is just enough  to get me to look beyond any prize no matter how great it may be.  In fact, the better the prize, the more skeptical I become.

Recently, however, I watched a talk show (it was Oprah Winfrey. I’m not proud of myself) and it featured a woman who spent her days entering every single contest she could find.  She treated it like a job, putting in 40+ hours a week.  I don’t remember the specifics but she had something like 10 cars and a 100 vacation days the previous year.

So I have come up with this idea: I am going to enter 5 contests a day for 1 year starting 9/21/09 (that’s 1825 contests!) and I am going to write about  it in this blog.  I’ll share the contests and their links with anyone following and I’ll announce any possible winnings.

To get started I have set up a new aol email address that will only be used for this purpose.  At the end of 1 year (9/21/10) I will tally up total winnings and total emails/day and will determine if this experiment was worth while or the biggest, most ridiculous waste of time.
